SPAB School Transportation & Field Trip Bus Rentals

Field trips, athletics and educational outings for Bay Area schools — planned around your bell schedule, chaperone counts and return time.

What SPAB means, in plain language.

SPAB stands for School Pupil Activity Bus. In California it describes buses used to carry students on school activity trips a field trip, an athletic event, a music competition and the additional certification the state requires of drivers doing that work. It is a separate requirement from a commercial driver's licence with a passenger endorsement, and separate again from the CPUC charter-party carrier permit that lets us operate as a carrier at all (TCP 28004).

Because the requirement depends on who the trip carries and how the school organises it, the practical answer for a coordinator is simple: tell us it is a school trip and what it is for. We confirm in writing which vehicles and drivers we can assign to your trip before you book, rather than leaving you to interpret the rules.

Drivers, vehicles and documentation

Every EvolveLimo driver holds a current commercial driver's licence with a passenger endorsement, works under a compliant drug and alcohol testing program, and drives vehicles in our own preventative maintenance and inspection program. We operate under CPUC charter-party carrier permit TCP 28004 and carry commercial passenger insurance.

SPAB certification is an additional, driver-level qualification. Rather than make a blanket claim about the whole fleet, we confirm the specific driver and vehicle assignment for your trip in writing when we quote it — and if we cannot cover a trip under the requirements your school is working to, we will tell you before you book instead of after.

Need certificates, driver records or vehicle inspection documentation for your district's file? Ask in your quote request and our office will confirm what we can provide for your trip.

Frequently asked questions

What does SPAB stand for?

School Pupil Activity Bus. In California it refers to buses used to carry students on school activity trips such as field trips and athletic events, and to the additional driver certification California requires for that work. It is separate from a regular commercial licence.

How do I know whether our trip needs SPAB?

It depends on how the trip is organised and who it carries. Tell us that the trip is for a school and what it is for, and we will confirm in writing which of our vehicles and drivers we can assign to it before you book.

How many students can travel on one vehicle?

Per-vehicle capacities range across 8–56 passengers. Chaperones occupy seats too, so give us the student count and the adult count separately.

Can we use several vehicles for a large group?

Yes. Grade-level and whole-school trips commonly run several vehicles on one schedule, departing and arriving together, coordinated by one dispatcher.

Can you work around school bell schedules?

Yes. Send your departure window and the time you must be back on campus, and we build the plan around both ends rather than just the destination.

Can you provide documentation for our district's file?

Yes. Tell us in your request what your district requires — for example insurance certificates or driver and vehicle records — and our office will confirm exactly what we can provide for your trip.

Can a student who uses a wheelchair travel with the group?

Tell us in the request. Accessible vehicles are arranged around the boarding requirements you describe, and our team confirms availability for your date before you commit.

Do you provide daily home-to-school bus routes?

No. Our school work is activity and trip transportation — field trips, athletics and educational outings — not daily home-to-school routes.
